BISCC/IVC - Something To Talk About 1/5/2026

What happens when two community connectors sit down for a real conversation?

Recently, Joanne Maher, Executive Director of Island Volunteer Caregivers (IVC), joined Reed from Bainbridge Island Senior Community Center (BISCC) for a thoughtful and engaging conversation as part of Something To Talk About. It was a chance to slow down, reflect, and share what’s really happening behind the scenes of caregiving, connection, and aging on Bainbridge Island.

During the conversation, Joanne talked about IVC’s mission—connecting neighbors facing challenges related to aging, disability, or adversity with volunteers and resources that help them live safely and independently. She shared how much of IVC’s work happens quietly: rides to medical appointments, meals dropped off at the right moment, a friendly visit that turns into a trusted relationship. These are small acts, but together they form a strong web of care across the island.

Reed and Joanne also explored how closely aligned IVC and BISCC are in their work. Both organizations are responding to a growing and changing older-adult population, and both believe deeply in dignity, belonging, and the power of community. From transportation and meals to social connection and support, the conversation highlighted how collaboration—not duplication—is what truly strengthens services for older adults.

As IVC looks ahead to its 30th anniversary in 2026, Joanne reflected on what has stayed the same over three decades: neighbors showing up for neighbors. While the needs may evolve, the heart of the work remains rooted in trust, compassion, and human connection.

If you’re curious about the stories, insights, and reflections shared in this conversation, we invite you to listen in. It’s more than an interview—it’s a window into the values, partnerships, and people that make our Bainbridge Island community such a special place to age. 🎧 Listen to Something To Talk About and hear the full conversation between Joanne and Reed.
