Staff:
Kaycie Wood, Administrative Director
Kaycie grew up in Southern California and moved to Bainbridge in 1989. She has two grown sons living in California along with a younger sister who also lives California with two grown sons. When Kaycie moved to the northwest she managed a non-profit employing people with disabilities. In 1996 after losing her mom to cancer, Kaycie joined Kitsap Hospice and enjoyed working with hospice patients as well as others needing caregiving on and off the Island. She still enjoys some caregiving in addition to her work with IVC. She has cared for many families over the years, most with whom she has remained friends. One particular family has been receiving care for over 15 years and has become Kaycie’s family.
Kaycie began working with IVC in 2005, starting in a 20 hour part-time position that soon blossomed to full time. When not working, she loves to be in her garden, pulling weeds, raking leaves and planting unusual plants. She enjoys a vegetable and herb garden every summer and is able to harvest bushels of blueberries from a couple of prolific berry plants. Kaycie lost her faithful dog Lily, a Sheltie mix during the snow storm of 2008. Her wonderful cat, Earl and she grieved so much that it soon was time to adopt a new friend. That new friend is Marly who was adopted from Canine Connections which is a program through Echo Glenn. The dogs are trained and readied for adoption by at-risk youth. It is truly a wonderful program and of course it is a win-win situation for the youth as well as the dogs. Both Marly and Earl are now friends and are spoiled rotten.
Karen Carson, Program Director
Karen has been an islander since she, her husband and 3 children moved here in 1980. Now two of her 3 children live on the island, each with 3 children of their own. Her youngest lives in Seattle and is a psychiatric social worker at Harborview Hospital. Karen helped to begin the Stephen Ministry Program at Rolling Bay Presbyterian Church, working in that ministry for 20 years. Before that she was involved with Hospice, visiting people who were terminally ill. Her passion is being present to those who are in the latest stage of their lives.
Another of Karen’s passions is sharing the journeys of women with cancer, folks caring for loved ones who are ill and those who are grieving a loss. Facilitating these support groups is a fulfilling experience for Karen, as these groups create safe and sacred space for people to be heard. as they share their stories. Karen has been Program Director of IVC since 2005, enjoying working with volunteers and care recipients, being constantly amazed at the generosity of time and energy freely given by neighbors helping neighbors in this community. In her free time, Karen enjoys reading, writing, crocheting and spending time with her grandchildren.
